Thge movie situation really sucks. There is NOTHING to see. Forget Blockbuster season, movies just suck. “The Road” doesn’t open until October. There is a movie called “Hurt Locker” opening in June I think that might be okay. I actually didn’t bother seeing anything this week including “Terminator” and actually tried to find a book.
Books suck, too. I might need to find a friend soon. Or join a terrorist organization.
Steven Soderberg has a new one, but it is only 80 minutes. It stars totally anal porn star Sasha Grey as a … I don’t know, regular person. The reviews are mixed, so it might be worth seeing on DVD. It is in such limited release, that’s how you will probably see it anyway, so what’s the point.
My point is that Soderberg is a mediocre talent who gets way too much credit, but luckily wastes his life making movies.
I actually watched all 4 hours of his digitally shot, mediocre biographic “masterpiece” on Che. I’m weird like that. Probably only cuz it was about Che. I recommend “The Motorcycle Diaries” as well. Che was pretty cool. I’m glad he died early and spared us having to read about how he got boring later but decided to write about it anyway.
Autonomous Unit reminded me that Woody Allen used to be funny and talked about all this stuff years ago.
It’s not apparent now, but soon AU’s post on Woody Allen will show the faults with COIN (Counterinsurgency Warfare) as well. Yeah, you didn’t think this was going to be so prescient, just you wait. Woody had no idea either.

Are there even movies out? My husband and I are sooo out of it. I went to a conference in Champagne IL this past week, got the standard hotel room with wireless and a big screen TV. We watched the TV and we were stunned. We were so out of touch with the advertising and the shows were sooo lame. We did catch a couple of the b-ball games (like that shot by LeBron across the court that won the game against LA). But who knew that McDonalds was taking over the whole coffee thing from Starbucks? Gawd the adverts were sickening and brutal.
So movies, what stinkin movies?
I am officially out of touch. You peeps are my only connection to any kind of mediated reality.

If there is anything worth watching (and I mean anything) you will see it here first.
But today’s answer is no.
I’m officially in touch.

Whoa, then you are seriously close to losing all touch with the real world. Wander over to Boise and give Dale a call. Maybe take in a few geysers (geezers?) at Jellystone park, Mrs. boo boo and Mr. boo boo bear.

Okay, please remind me of what the fuck I was going to write about and I’ll do it, promise [insert smiling yellow happy face about here].
But I love picking on the regulars! They know I really love them.

Unlike other bloggers, I worship my commenters like gold. If I don’t like you, I tell you to fuck off.
I have about 10 people that comment here and I treat them all like family. If it gets to be a situation where there are more, we will have to change that.

Well, I’ve been busy. I just closed the negotiations on a $350K one-year project. Now, I am even happier, because tomorrow I may get another $300K to spend in only 9 months, AND I’m going to compete for a $850K per year 5 year “fellowship” with the DoD! That kind of money may even get your attention, however briefly, JR.
Too bad the world’s ending soon. Kinda puts a damper on things.
You know, I know you bought oil at $35 and are making a mint now. Why don’t you buy an airline and come visit?

“Two Eyes Open” .. what a fantastic inside-joke blog title. Lots of newbies would never get the reference. JR, thank you for not having excommunicated me for mostly posting elsewhere.

Gracias, Nudge. Now ask him to fix your Future Townies link so it goes to the current WordPress site and not the Blogger dead end.

Doom,
Congrats on the grant. I have never gotten one that wasn’t an in house deal or something I won as an award (small stuff). I ain’t built like that. Doom’s Job is sooo secure. His bosses need his grantsmanship given other funding will be caving in.
I wanted to be sassy and smart and say Doom really has a pair or something, but what it honestly means is high status/prestige. Doomy is da bomb. No brag, just fact. Again, congrats.
Grant writing is hard work. Lots of rejection until you learn what the hell you are doing. And even then. There is also a social aspect to it, sometimes. I have known folks who ruined their careers trying to land a grant or three and failing to publish as a result of the time they put into writing the failed grants.
We voted no on a tenure case of a woman who only had one publication to her name and was second author on a book with her high status husband. This is after having her degree for 22 years. They kept her and put her into a sort of miscellaneous department. Why? Because she had a $6,000,000 grant to study inner city crime and poverty.
Grants is powerful stuff in the ole ivory tower. Even Hawaiian Ivory. ;-)

Ah, the ivory tower. I got kicked out of it and haven’t been back .. and now I’m just another wandering deconstructionista :)
Doom, JR sez he already updated the link, but then, it’s possible his email fell through a crack in time (from the future) and just hasn’t been written yet in the here-and-now.

This is so true. Sometimes I recount the past so many months or years and wonder why my publication rate was not higher. It’s usually grants written that were not funded or too much travel.
Nudge, I will check the link.
